Chapter 15: Class Sizes

Chapter 15.jpg

Another important thing to understand while you are teaching English abroad is class size. The whole dynamic of a class can change depending on how big or how small it is. With smaller classes you are open to playing more personalized games and are able to have a focus on each student and making sure that they are properly learning the material you are teaching. With bigger classes, classroom management will become a more difficult thing and you will not be able to have as much focus on each student individually. In addition, in bigger classes you need to be careful about the games and activities that you play as you need to make sure that every student is involved and that everyone is able to learn something when you do games or activities. In addition, also keep in mind how your students react to games and activities, as a teacher you need to always adjust things to your audience and making sure that you pick the right activities and games is very important. Finally, always take notes on how your certain games or activities went and find out what works well with your big and small classes. It is very important to learn what to do in both small and big classes in order to keep your classes running smoothly and your students’ content.
