Section 1: Teaching English Abroad
Chapter 5: Role of the Learner and Role of the Teacher in the Classroom
The roles of the learner and the teacher in the classroom is something that can often seem simple: “The student learns and the teacher teaches.” However, it often is more complex than the student learning and the teacher teaching. While the role of the learner is definitely one of coming to the class and absorbing information, it is the role of the teacher to facilitate learning in many different ways. Coming into class and learning the same way every single day can get repetitive and boring so it is very important to be constantly changing and evolving your teaching style as time goes by. By repeating the same procedure without any variance will make some students feel discouraged and make them wish to not study English or they will have a strong desire to play games or get off task during classes. As a teacher you can create and make fun and educational games in the classroom which will lead to students looking forward to coming to class. Something as simple as giving students a chance to run around or a chance to play in an educational way is one of the best ways you can fulfill your role as teacher in your classes. As a teacher you can look at your students and help them fulfill their roles as learners by fulfilling your role as a teacher properly and giving them the proper chances to learn as they are in your classes.
