Section 5: Teaching Skills
Chapter 32: Teaching Writing
Moving on to one of the simplest skills to develop, but very difficult to use in an always clear and effective way is writing. Writing is a skill that can be paired up with phonics to facilitate learning both at the same time. During phonics classes you can point out the capital and lowercase letters for each letter and in addition to that you can give tracing writing to the students in order to give them a chance to associate both the capital and lowercase letters with each alphabet letter and sound. By pairing up writing with other language skills, writing is a skill that can be quickly and easily developed along with the other English language skills. Another important future way to teach writing is through dictation (saying a word or sentence out loud and having the students write them down). By using dictation, you are able to help prepare your students for future exams by having them both understand the sounds and how to properly listen to and understand English through both writing and listening. Always remember that with writing you can always pair it up with other skills in order to help facilitate your students to actively learn even during boring writing activities. Overall, remember to help your students develop their writing skills, but don’t push too hard for students to always be writing, writing is often boring so it can make students lose motivation or become easily frustrated when they are having problems with writing activities. Make sure to have an active role in the classroom as well during writing so you can help guide your students in making and forming sentences as well as giving help whenever the class needs it.
