Chapter 25: Testing and Assessments for Students
When it comes to giving assessments or tests in an English classroom the most important thing to know is what is expected of the students and what kind of assessments you are giving to them. Are you giving written tests to children? Are you giving verbal assessments? It is important to know what you need to prepare your students for in order to give them the right tools to successfully complete their tests and assessments. Testing for students is something that causes a lot of stress and can often cause students to not be able to perform, even when they are testing on something that they have successfully done dozens of times. It is very important to give your students a space where they can focus and not to make students tense when they are testing. If you notice some students constantly failing or having problems producing the language in a testing environment, you should look to see how you can change the environment and help your student improve when it comes to taking tests. One good recommendation is to sometimes film your classes in order to give a fair view of your students when they are able to perform in the classroom just as a backup to show your students’ progress and that they are developing. At times, there will be a lot of pressure on you as a teacher to show parents or your school that your kids are doing well and developing well; however, you should remember not to push these responsibilities on your student and to give them the best environment possible for their learning and testing.
